For more than 100 years, Scouts have contributed in several efforts and projects to serve their communities, addressing local issues. Each week, Scout youth and scout leaders engage scout group activities, individual efforts and joint initiatives with local partners to improve the quality of life of community members both inspired by our founder’s example and as an educative experience for youth to become active citizens.

It is established in the Constitution of the World Organization of the Scout Movement the purpose of Scout Movement is: “…to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.” And so we inspire Scouts and youth to engage in community service efforts to develop their skills, to learn about dialogue and conflict resolution, leadership, social awareness, to assume responsibility and commit to specific goals, to be autonomous and supportive to others and ultimately to Create a Better World.

One of the most relevant calls of action at global level happened during the centenary of Scouting in 2007, when more than 10 million scouts in more than 110 countries presented their “Gifts for Peace” to the world, supporting causes like: child labor, AIDS Prevention, Environmental awareness, interreligious dialogue, violence prevention, etc.; inspired by the ideal of Peace to “to inspire young people to tackle issues in their communities, build peace and bring people together”

In 2009, inspired by Scouts immense effort His Majesty King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, refer of Scouts as “Messengers of Good, Love and Peace”. Since then, HM is supporting Scouts to spread their message through Scouts Messengers of Peace Program, today’s WOSM flagship to raise awareness amongst youth and their role as active citizens to inspire at least 200 million people as Messengers of Peace.

Acknowledging Scout efforts to promote dialogue and Peace, HM created the Scouts Messengers Hero Award to recognize individual or joint efforts to address community issues.
