An Australian at KISC
A clash of warm and cold, sunshine and snow.
arlier in the season I was able to take on the challenges of hiking in the valley, as well as the Via Ferrata, Klettersteig in German, some inspiring summer activities. Of course, I enjoyed this with my fellow Pinkies. Hyung (KR) and I gave the Via Ferrata a really good attempt, we managed to complete it in 2 hours and 20 minutes which, although it’s not a season record, was fun and quite emotionally stimulating. It would not have been possible without the beautiful weather that we have had at the start of the season, it has allowed us to get out and about with our activities, enjoying each other’s company and challenging ourselves to reach goals all over the valley.
Coming from Australia, a country of vastly differing weather patterns, Kandersteg can be quite surprising. I am simultaneously tested and amazed by the weather here. Although I am, sadly, not able to wear board shorts and thongs (what we call flip flops down under) every day, I do enjoy waking up, dressing in Pink and working in this beautiful, breezy mountainous environment.
Now as we are reaching the end of the season, the prospect of skiing and sledding has become a hot topic. From the start of November, the valley has started to become blanketed in a stunning snowfall. As the lakes turn icy and the paths freeze over we become quite aware of our limited time here, so to make the most of the cold weather, we get outside and play in the snow. We also have the opportunity to join the Kandersteg locals to support the local Ice Hockey team, a sport I had never played until coming to KISC. With the snow comes some exciting ideas for activities with the Pinkies, we are prepared to have many snowball fights, make a few snowmen and even get a bit messy with the snow sometimes. All in all, Kandersteg becomes even more breath-taking with each snowfall, I am sure that as we get closer to Winter, we will discover more and more about what it takes to live in an environment like this.
I hope that my time here, as it comes to a close, can be looked back on with happiness and fulfilment. Living Life of a Pinkie has been an amazing experience, accompanied by harsh and wonderful weather. Life in Kandersteg never ceases to amaze this Autumn-loving Australian.
