Day 4 of the 40th #ScoutConf celebrates João Armando Gonçalves as new Chairperson of the World Scout Committee
A thunder of applause welcomed the announcement of the appointment of João Armando Gonçalves from Portugal as the new Chairperson of the World Scout Committee. João will be supported by two Vice-Chairpersons: Jemima Nartey from Ghana, and Daniel Ownby from the United States of America.
After a review of the 22nd World Scout Jamboree that took place in Sweden in 2011, the delegates were invited to choose from among multiple seminar topics on Youth and Scouting, including Safe from Harm and the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
After lunch, a special session on Messengers of Peace showcased how vibrant this initiative is across numerous NSOs. Check out how Scouts in Lebanon provided humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees.
Late afternoon, the Conference delegates selected Azerbaijan to host the 41st World Scout Conference in 2017. This will be the first time the Eurasia Region welcomes a World Scouting event.
Day Four ended with a High Level Partners Event entitled “Scouting – a social force”, with a keynote address from Corinne Woods, Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. Also present were other global partners of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) including the World Alliance of YMCAs and WAGGGS.
The event also marked the 10th anniversary of the Scouts of the World Award, the only award for youth granted by WOSM. The Award challenges all young people, Scouts and non-Scouts, to reflect on global issues and act on them at local level. It focuses on three main intervention areas: Development, Peace and Sustainable Environment.
Another busy and fruitful day!
