Around 20 Scouts from Belgrade, Kragujevac, Lazarevac and Velika Plana went to Svilajnac on 24 May to help the locals. This was another action coordinated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This town was under water for a long time and now that the Resava River has returned to its riverbed the people of this town have started cleaning up the mess left in their homes. First, we helped the workers load the things from the streets into the trucks. After that, we went in small groups from one house to the next one, asking if they needed our help with anything.
The sight is truly terrible. The smell of wet homes and things hangs heavy in the air. But this cannot communicate the severity of the situation and the loss that these people feel. They tell us that the water came in just a couple of minutes and that it flooded their homes in no time. They have been working for days, getting their ruined things out of their homes and into the streets. But thay say that the things are not the problem (for those more fortunate than the others). Of course, many people will have many financial difficulties getting back on their feet. But, rich or poor, they will surely miss the memories that were made in their homes that no longer look like they used to.
It was difficult seeing those people in their ruined homes, salvaging what they could. We helped them in whatever ways we could, and they were happy that they could take some time off from getting their furniture out of their homes, having in mind that they have been doing that for days. You could see how tired they were and how stressed out. Perhaps some might think we did not do much, but we are glad that we helped at least some of them.
