#Unguvu blog number 4! Today the participants started by looking at the reasons why we encourage diversity and inclusion, and the reasons people might not want to encourage it. We used the example of a University to explore this idea, and found that although their might be some difficulties in implementing a diversity and inclusion strategy- these weren’t really reasons not to do it. Later in the afternoon, the team had an open session outside the classroom where in teams of six we explored how participants could encourage strong partnerships between NSOs. Key Learning: • Diversity might be difficult, but when a long term view is taken, it’s positives vastly outweigh this. • Common issues between organisations for partnerships can be identified more easily than we might first think. • Games can be used to explore the issue of diversity and inclusion. Big Question: What structures does your organisation have that excludes potential members with migrant backgrounds? Big Idea: The first step is self-awareness. Do as Michael Jackson - start with taking a good look in the mirror. Identify your own barriers; excluding norms and structures. Who are typically members and why? Be critical!
