Service at farm on 22&23 Feb 2014 by JIM Scout Group, Chennai
Leave this world a little better than you found it. - B.-P
As a part of our group's service program and on account of World Thinking day we supported and helped farming at Siruthavur village, near Thiruporur, Chennai. The service was rendered for 2 days. Apart from the service we extended to the farming community, we also camped in the country side and enjoyed the nature. We also have plans to prolong this service in the future.
Siruthavur village is located 5 km from Thiruporur, near to Chennai. Siruthavur is famous for bird watching, lake and wild life. The lake is a rain-fed fresh water lake used for irrigation and fishing. Famous for the fresh water ducks such as Eurasian wigeon and Cotton Pygmy Goose, over 70 resident and migratory bird species have been recorded so far. This is one place near Chennai city where both Red-wattled Lapwing and Yellow-wattled Lapwing are seen in close proximity.Apart from bird watching, the village has a reserve forest area where animals like fox, Asian palm civet, monkeys can be spotted.
Since the urbanization is expanding everywhere, we thought of going to back to our roots. Farming is one of the roots from which we were evolved and thus we decided to help the farming community as a reciprocation to our daily meal.
During this service program we helped in the following disciplines.
Usage of organic fertilizers
Sprinkler irrigation systems
Drip irrigation systems
Flood irrigation systems
Dairy and farming
Added to this, we had discussions on the following topics
Impact of pesticides and chemicals in food chain
Advantages of organic farming
Effective irrigation methods in drought conditions
This was a great experience as the hands-on service made us to understand the challenges faced by the farmers and the methods used by them to overcome it.
