Rosa Scouts and Guides Group's participation in 28th India Gandhi National Integration Award

12th Feb 2014

The members of Rosa Scouts and Guides Group, which included 4 Scouts and 2 guides, got a chance to attend the 28th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.
It is a prestigious award accorded by the Indian National Congress, after former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
This Award is given annually starting from 1985 to distinguished persons/institutions for promoting national integration and understanding and fellowship
amongst religious groups, communities, ethnic groups, cultures, languages and traditions of India and the strengthening, through thought and action of the nation's
sense of solidarity.

The Scouts and Guides from various groups of Delhi assembled at Jawahar Bhawan on 31st oct 2013 at 4pm.
After going through the safety check, we entered the hall where we reserved seats for the delegates, ministers and other influential people.
As these respected people entered the hall, we, Scouts and Guides, did our duty and offered our seats to them. We then went back and stood near the end of the hall.
After that the Prime Minister of the country Mr. Manmohan Singh along with another UPA minister, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, who is the daughter-in-law of late Mrs. Indira Gandhi,
entered the hall.
Everyone stood up to acknowledge their presence.

Then Mr Motilal Vohra, the organiser of the event welcomed Mr. Singh, Ms. Gandhi and professor M.S. Swaminathan who was the recepient of the 2012 Indira Gandhi award.
It was followed by a patriotic song sung by few students of Springfield School.
Mr. Vohra then told us that the 28th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration was being given to Mr. Swaminathan in recognition of his lifelong contributions
to Agricultural Science, upliftment of the poor and national food self-sufficiency.

The Prime Minister in his speech said that it would not be wrong to say that India could achieve the Green Revolution due to Indira Gandhi's leadership and
Swaminathan's efforts.
Then the Congress President, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, came to the dias and recalled that when most of the states were facing famine, Indira Gandhi took a pledge to achieve
self-reliance in foodgrains.
The acclaimed agriculture scientist, Professor Swaminathan, in his award acceptance speech, recalled the transition of the country from that of a foodgrain importer to
the one which helped Vietnam fight famine by sending food.

The program ended with the recitation of the National Anthem. Finally we left the hall, had light refreshments and had a chat with our fellow Scout brothers and
Guide sisters.
This day still remains one where everyone got to learn a lot from all.
