This project was approved in 2012 and and the project finally took place on the 2nd - 5th of May 2013 and was led by Geraldine Böttcher. The project leader and his team organised a two day training conducted by Peter Statham. Peter does all the Environmental education camp training for SSA around the country. The training included modules about Sanitation, Recycling, HIV/Aids, Stars, Energy, Food for Life, Climate change and Weather. 6 Rover and 20 pupils participated in the training. The Rovers were taught different methods on how they can teach and motivate children. With the skills acquired during the training, the Rovers managed to prepare a workshop for 20 pupils. Using several methods such as presentations, games and exercises the Rovers conducted their own workshop for 20 children. This was the first training for non-Scouts and it was also for the first time that the Nelspruit Scout centre was used as a training venue. This was exciting news as such external trainings are a great exposure and they bring opportunities for all the Scouts in Mpumalanga. The school that participated on this project does not have an active Scout Group, but as the result of the training they will be opening one soon. And this is what the pupils said “We are going to open a Scout Group in our community soon because we enjoyed the course and we want to learn more about scouting, climate change and the other topics we had in the course.” The pupils were grateful for new knowledge they have gained on environmental awareness. This was a good exercise and a great motivation for Rovers to use the new knowledge and the methods they learned directly after the training. Towards the end of the training the Rovers reflected on the overall of the training and they discussed the improvements for the next trainings to come. Rovers enjoyed the training because they said it was diverse and it combined several methods. They have gained the knowledge on how to conduct a workshop like this on their own and they will be sharing this with fellow Scouts in their districts.
