Gone Home: Miloš Miović (1911-2010)

12. Nov 2010

Slovenian Scouts were deeply saddened by the death of Miloš Miovic, the oldest participant at the 21st World Scout Jamboree in 2007. He passed away on November 1 in Maribor, Slovenia. The energy he projected, the wisdom shared and the witty remarks given often left us speechless. He has been and will remain a true inspiration.

Miloš Miovic, born in 1911, spent most of his life involved in Scouting. After joining the movement in 1927, he remained closely involved for most of his life.

Miloš played an important role in the early 1990s when the Slovenian Scout Association (ZTS) was joining the World Organization of the Scout Movement. His continuous contributions to the development of the spiritual dimension as well as thoughts about the role Scouting within society were invaluable.

In 1929 an illness prevented Milos from attending the World Scout Jamboree and he came to live this dream by attending the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Chile (1999) and the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in the UK (2007). He refused to be treated any differently than other members of the contingent and international participants. A smile was his loyal companion while welcoming guests at the Slovenian Tent. He attended numerous national and international events.

Many of us remember his words at the last jamboree in the UK when discussing his possible attendance in Sweden. He then said “Let’s not lose hope. if I don’t get to the Swedish one, I’ll go to the next”. Miloš may not travel with us, but he will be there with us in spirit.
