Learning How to Fundraise for Projects
I discover this workshop through my volunteer group and was quite interested in how to fundraise. I believe fundraising is an important skill especially when we need to deal with volunteery projects. Hence, I signed up for it immediately.
On 9th February 2019, I arrived earlier in Brickfield Asia College Kuala Lumpur (BAC KL). I registered at the counter and started looking through the tentative. Besides that, I also talked to the other participants who came early. I was excited to know that they came from various background such as refugee center voluntee, HIV centre worker, university students and more. There were about 40 participants and helpers in total.
The workshop started at 9am with a short ice breaker. After that, Mr. Hasan kick start the workshop with brief introduction of himself. I was shocked to learn that he was younger than me one year because he looked very matured and professional in the field of fundraising. He then continued with introducing us the types of fundraising where we have physical fundraising and online fundraising. He also showed a few scenarios as case studies. This helped me understand what kind of situation can we ask for funds and what methods can be used in each different situation.
At 12pm, we stopped for lunch break about 30 minutes. At 12.30pm, we continued with learning about how to build a trusting relationship with our donor, Through this, I learnt that trust is a very important bond between the donor and the receiver. One way is to always update the donor about the things we did with the donation given. This is because showing the result and proof of what we used the money for will definitely reassures the donor. Around 1.30pm, we were separated into groups to plan a fundraising project. I was given the opportunity to lead the discussion in my group, together with some new friends. After 30 minutes of discussion and planning, we began our group presentation. My new friend, Sabiha and I were representatives to introduce our fundraising project to the crowd. Although we were a bit nervous, we still managed to deliver the presentation properly. Mr Hasan gave us some feedback and we had a short Question & Answer with the crowd. It was an awesome experience!
At 3.00pm, the fundraising workshop came to an end. All of us participants were given a certificate of participation by Mr. Hasan, representing the Al-Hasan Volunteer Network (AHVN). I took a photo with Mr. Hasan as a memory. I also took some group photos with my new friends. It was a wonderful day!
In conclusion, this workshop has taught me how to fundraise. I also learnt about what are the Do's and Don'ts of fundraising. Hopefully in the near future, I can utilize this new skill I had learn in getting funds for my projects.
