Duke of Edinburgh for Young Leaders (Kota) 2019
Duke of Edinburgh Award, also known as International Award for Young People is not a new thing for the society and many of the young people are enthusiastic towards this. In Malaysia, Scout NSO that is Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia (PPM) has work closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sport and Ministry of Education so that this great program can be integrated as part of co-curriculum for the students especially for scout members. This program targeted 14-24 years old of students as participant as they are the future leader of the nation. And this award is recognized over the globe and almost 180 countries accept this as the government believe this program able to transform the youngsters into great future leaders.
Commissioners of Fort district (Daerah Kota) of Melaka state had made the start for the programs on 1 June 2019 (Saturday) which involve participants from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan states. The event took place in SJKC Primary School which located in a rural area, named Air Salak. It is 25km away from Melaka town and about 80km from Negeri Sembilan town. Gathering of 110 participants (100 students and 10 adults) in this place, making memorable experience as they are exposed to several cultures and learning. Nevertheless, the expedition journey for them to travel from far. Using the map, compass and ask around the people in order to reach the venue become the initial challenge for the students. Several exchange program such as cultural understanding, equality mindset, sustainable development goals, climate change and etc are being carried out. These meaningful events are surely benefit all the students and adults who involved in the program.
The students are divided into few groups and being guided by the young leaders. Patrol system is introduced to them so that they can behave better and work as a team. Friendly competitions are being planned so that the youngsters are motivated and challenged. This also promotes the discipline within themselves so that they can communicate or behave better. The main objectives are to expose the youngster to current challenges of the society/world, in order to making sure, they are ready mentally and physically to cope with those impacts. Future leaders should not afraid off whatever happened, they need to prepare themselves by now and strive for excellence. Duke of Edinburgh award aims to transform the young leader to ensure the better tomorrow. Cultural night where all the participants gathered, sang songs, and danced. They mix around with friends and adults to know them better in fun way.
In conclusions, this program not only benefits the youngsters but also the leaders. All participant learnt and relearned through out the day and skilling up themselves. Students went back in tired but happy as they gained many knowledges and experiences. They also looking forward to join if there is similar programs like this.
