When COVID-19 hit Nepal, the government imposed a lock down. One community in Damak City at Jhapa district has been severely affected where hunger is a daily struggle. This community has 15-20 families where most men work as construction workers in a nearby city. With the lockdown, work was halted, making it harder for them to earn for their families.

The Himalaya Rover Ranger Scout Crew, comprised of Rover Scouts and leaders, identified the families to support.  They used personal funds and asked their friends for support.

“When we saw how families are suffering from hunger due to lockdown, our group acted immediately and organised food distribution for them,” said Rover Bidhya Sunwar.

Every member of the group has a role –budgeting, buying the ingredients, cooking, and distributing food.

Sunwar said, “When local police came to know about our work, many of them, and other individuals started donating, and helping us distribute the food.”

The Scout group knew that food distribution is just a temporary solution. So they demonstrated backyard gardening to the families. Himalaya Pratap Dahal, President of the Hamse Dumse Forest Office, provided seedlings for planting. He appreciated the work of Scouts.

This collaboration is something that all of us in the community will benefit,” Dahal said.

Before the pandemic, the Himalaya Rover and Ranger Crew has been active serving the community in different ways. This includes regular awareness campaigns and free lectures on traffic rules and road safety with the support of local government.

Rover Kiran Budhathoki, 17, said, “Scouting enables me to do what I am passionate about – serving others. Although, this pandemic brought a lot of problems to many people around the world, but it also caused my community to see and appreciate Scouting even more."

“In serving others in need, Scouts gain more from that experience. Scouting teaches us many things about life. We can tackle every situation that come into our way, that’s why we love Scouting,” he added.
