WOSM shocked and saddened by untimely passing of Gdańsk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz
On Sunday, 13 January, Mr Pawel Adamowicz, who served as the Mayor of Gdańsk in Poland, was violently attacked at a charity event and died shortly thereafter from injuries. This unimaginable act of violence was a shock to members of the Scout Movement, and we offer our sincere condolences following the tragic passing of Mr Adamowicz.
Over his years of service as the Mayor of Gdańsk, Mr Adamowicz was a reliable friend to Scoutsin Poland and opened the city to become a meeting hub for young people from Europe and around the world. He truly embodied the values of service and global citizenship, and today, he will be mourned by the countless people whowere touched by his passion and commitment.
Secretary General, Ahmad Alhendawi, and World Scout Committee Chairperson, Craig Turpie, today issued a statement expressing their sympathies and condemning the act of violence:
"The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) condemns in the strongest terms the unspeakable attack that ultimately took the life of Mr Adamowicz. The Scout Movement stands in full solidarity with the Polish people at this difficult time and we join in remembering the many qualities of this outstanding leader that the world lost earlier today. Mr Adamowicz was a remarkable supporter of Scouting and a strong believer in the potential of young people.”
Mr Adamowicz will be rightly remembered for his great accomplishments which will live on as an enduring legacy and inspiration to others.
