Youth Advisor Update #1 - Oct '14 What? World Scout Committee Induction Meeting Where? TMR Scout Camp, Catskills, NY, USA When? October ‘14 Who? Daiana, Jérémy, Luis, Maeed, Máire, & Montaser Hello everyone, We are excited to share some updates from the World Scout Committee Induction Meeting with you. It was held at the Ten Mile River Scout Camps, which are owned by the Boy Scouts of America's Greater New York Council in the midst of the Catskill Mountains, from the 17th to the 19th October 2014. The overall aim of the meeting was to help prepare members of the World Scout Committee to successfully carry out their role, and to align the Committee around shared priorities and working methods for the triennium. The three day meeting agenda was divided into four parts. 1- Induction training, 2- Looking into Future, 3- Reviewing working methods, and 4- Future priorities and how to approach them. Two key people took part in helping facilitate the induction meeting; Ms. Pamela Lupton-Bowers, Founder and Managing Director PBL Consultancy Ltd and Mr. Jim Turley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (RTD) Ernst & Young. All 12 elected members of the World Committee, 6 Regional Chairpersons and the 3 other Ex-Officio members of the World Committee participated, along with the 6 of us - ensuring full World Committee attendance. World Scout Bureau Global Directors, along with a very capable and competent team of World Scout Bureau staff, were also present - assisting and providing much required input and updates. The World Committee had practical sessions during the meetings, allowing interaction with each other, learning more from one another, building team spirit and coming up with solutions and answers to pressing matters at hand for the new triennium (which will be outlined following our meeting in November). There was a great synergy between the members of the committee, irrespective their individual roles in the committee. Indeed, a very strong consensus to come out of the weekend is that while there were only 12 voting members, there were 27 members of the World Scout Committee. Topics such as board governance, understanding strategic planning, finance and communication skills were covered during the first day of the meetings. Discussions on different WOSM structures, roles and functions, along with understanding current status and projects undertaken by WOSM, outcomes of the 40th World Scout Conference and further discussion on Triennial Objectives were part of the second day meetings. On the last day the committee took on Working Methods and expectations, and looking into future, priorities and how best to approach them. One possible factor which contributed to the overall ambiance was the fact that we went old-school scouting for the weekend -staying in cabin dormitories, eating in a mess hall, and even making smores at a campfire during our stay in the 12,000 acres of pristine woodland Scout Reservation, which is home to a wide variety of year-round Scout camping opportunities. As Youth Advisors attending our first big WSC gathering, the experience was amazing. We were actively involved with all members of the new World Committee. We learned a lot from the more experienced committee members, and we are confident that we will be able to continue to contribute effectively in all discussions pro-actively. We got great insights into WOSM operations and governance, which gave us a view of the 'bigger picture' of the work that has been done and that which has yet to be done. As well as engaging in the business of the weekend, we were able to steal some time for ourselves, and have our own Youth Advisors meetings. We used these times as opportunities to reflect on our role as Youth Advisors as well as begin to organize ourselves. We discussed individual areas of interest and backgrounds that would help strengthen the role we play as Youth Advisors, and brainstormed new ideas and action steps to ensure a way forward for our work as a team. Once we have these plans finalized, we hope to share them with you to get your feedback. All members of the World Committee left TMR with a better understanding of each other and the tasks ahead, sleeves rolled to start work on creating a better world. We laid great foundations to ensure that we hit the ground running during our first full meeting in Kuala Lumpur, from the 14th to the 16th of November. The raw outputs from our meeting here in New York will be refined and used as a basis for our discussions there. Once we have the refined information we will share it with you - watch this space!
