1st Solar Instructors Training in Zimbabwe

On the outset, we wish to register our profound gratitude to SOLAFRICA for stretching their support towards our first solar training in the Scouting organisation of Zimbabwe. Also, the support realised from the Scout Association of Zimbabwe who provided the host facilities for the training.

The training took place from the 10th to the 12th of November at the Harare Scout Provincial Office and had 25 Participants and 10 service team members who also got an opportunity to attend some of the sessions. The training realised an intergenerational and gender balanced participation and collectively all members where from the diverse parts of the country.

All participants stayed in canvas Tents pitched at the venue. The tents where also water proof for rainy weather and we used the Head Quarters hall for activities. We provided meals for everyone in camp starting from Friday Lunch to Sunday Lunch including Tea Breaks twice or thrice a day.

Most of the equipment needed was available which made all the participants to have a real workshop experience. Only the equipment for Solar Torch was not enough for all and foil paper for Copen Hagen cookers was so
expensive by the time of purchase due to the fluctuating economy so couldn’t afford enough for each participant.
With what we had secured, we did a several experiments as individuals and in pairs where resources could not permit.

1. 25 New Solar Instructors (Partial) Trained.
2. 6-month Solar Promotion work plan developed.
3. 1 successful solar training.
4. 1 Solar suitcase for the National Scout Association
5. Solar Beep
6. Solar Lamps
7. Copen Hagen Cookers
8. Demonstration of Solar Glasses, Solar Suitcase, Solar Heat Exp, Solar Lamp Soldering, Solar Fountain, Solar Cooking, Photovoltaics,
9. 8 Coordinators chosen but only 4 received the training

Sudden change of weather (Rainy) / False meteorological data provided.
Lack of response / communication from 4 out of 8 provinces.
No big Parabolic Cooker to show the real efficiency and effectiveness of solar cooking
We could not secure more funding for starter kits to give out to all our participants and would wish for at least one set for each province so they can be able to use when doing demonstrations.
3 Days seemed to be little time to cover everything in detail.

Participants will further promote SGS activities first in their respective provinces with provincial Solar Instructors training as a priority. In 6 months we expect sub-national trainings in the following provinces
1. Mash Central Province
2. Manicaland Province
3. Midlands Province
4. Harare Province
5. Mash-East Province
To organise a second phase training for Advanced photovoltaics and deeper Solar education for individuals to qualify as solar technicians. 6 months
To organise another training for more adult support at National level and for th4 other 4 provinces who failed to attend.
To solicit for support to produce solar scout badges and scarfs.
National coordinator to work directly with the provincial coordinators and the Training Commissioner to device local ways to promote solar scouting and further the education.
