In the past years, several countries in the Asia-Pacific Region were hit by natural disasters such as tsunami, earthquake, forest fire, typhoon and others almost every year. And in any disaster, Scouts are always there to help. Living out the Scout Motto“Be Prepared”, the need for capacity building is always there, which is the focus of the Asia-Pacific for this triennium.

That is why the Asia-Pacific Support Centre organised the APR Workshop on Disaster Response Management hosted by the Scout Association of Japan (SAJ) on 5-9 October 2016 in Ibaraki, Japan, which gathered 31 participants from 14 National Scout Organizations (NSO). At the end of the workshop, participants understood the role of NSO in disaster response and how to develop a disaster response management unit at national and local levels.

The opening ceremony was attended by International Commissioner Masato Mizuno, Senior Executive Director & Chairperson, International Committee
Mr Minoru Nishimura, National Secretary Mr Koichi Kimura and 2nd Vice Chairman of the APR Scout Committee who is also SAJ’s Deputy National Commissioner Reiko Suzuki and other local staff. Special guest of the workshop was Her Imperial Highness The Princess Akishino, who expressed her support to the event and took time to visit the workshop and went around and met with the participants and listen to Keynote Speaker Mr Kensuke Onishi, CEO Peace Winds Japan.

APR Management Sub-Committee Chairman Dr Somboon Bunyasiri graced the workshop while World Scout Bureau Asia-Pacific Support Centre Regional Director J. Rizal C. Pangilinan, Boy Scouts of the Philippines Secretary General Roger Villa, Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia Headquarters Commissioner Ramakrishnan Ramasamy and Asia-Pacific Support Centre Director Prassanna Shrivastava helped facilitating the workshop.

The APR Scout Foundation supported the event.
