12 March 2019: Niamey, Niger: Scouts from all over Africa are gathering in Niger for a series of activities that will culminate with the celebration of the Africa Scout Day on 16th March 2019.

The Africa Scout Day ( was established through the resolution (CM Res 1607 (LXII)) of the Council of Ministers of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) – now African Union (AU), meeting at its 62nd Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, from 21st to 23rd June 1995. The day which is marked on the 13th March every year, was set aside in recognition of the Scout Movement’s efforts in the areas of education and moulding of young people, training of adults and implementation of transformative community development activities.

Scouts and Scouters throughout the region gather, along with their partners, to take stock of the achievements of Scouting, promote the spirit of world kinship, cooperation and mutual assistance amongst Scout Organizations within the Region and build partnerships for more social impact in Africa.

Also taking place in the framework of this year’s Africa Scout Day celebrations are the following activities:

  • Regional Assistant Scout Leaders Training Course on 8-12 March
  • 9th West Africa Zonal Scout Youth Forum on 11-12 March
  • 13th West Africa Zonal Scout Conference on 13-15 March
  • International Youth Camp on 13-15 March
  • Dialogue for Peace Training on 13-15 March

Apart from these activities taking place in Niger, various National Scout Organizations will also be hosting local celebrations in their respective countries.

The main Africa Scout Day celebrations will be held on 16th March 2019 at the Palais de Congres from 9:00am. Media, partners, supporters of Scouting and the general public are invited to join us in marking this important day, which not only recognises the Scout Movement’s contribution to the growth and development of Africa but that also highlights the growing need for youth and citizen participation in the attainment of sustainable peace, justice, equality and prosperity of our communities.
