World Scouting honours the legacy and contributions of Jim Sharp
World Scouting today honours the legacy and extraordinary contributions of The Reverend Jim Sharp, former Global Director for Corporate Services in the World Scout Bureau. Jim’s unexpected death at home in Geneva, Switzerland has been announced recently.
Jim served World Scouting for over 30 years with dedication and commitment. He originally joined the World Scout Bureau at its Geneva office in 1983 as Director of Programme, and played a key role in the development of the first World Youth Programme Policy. In 2007 Jim became the Director for WOSM Institutional Support and Coordinator of the Office of the Secretary General. In this capacity he provided constitutional and institutional support, as well as guidance and advice to generations of World Scout Committee (WSC) members during a period in which WOSM went through profound organisational and constitutional change. He also served as the key staff support to the WSC’s Constitutions Committee and the Honours and Awards Committee, ensuring a steady and consistent approach in these areas over many years.
In 2010, Jim was promoted to Executive Director, General Management, one of the two senior management roles in the Geneva office reporting to the Secretary General. Within this remit Jim provided strategic leadership to the institutional, financial, information technology, administrative and communication staff units. In the final years before his retirement, Jim provided his expertise and know-how to the World Scout Bureau’s reorganisation and relocation process, which established the two WSB Global Support Centres in Geneva and Kuala Lumpur and the creation of four Global Teams each led by a Global Director.
Jim retired on 31 December 2014 as Global Director, Corporate Services, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and dedication to the Scout Movement he loved. He is remembered by the many staff members who had the honour of serving with him for his calm and steadfast demeanour, combined with a profound and deep understanding of both the educational, organisational and institutional aspects of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
Since his retirement, The Reverend Jim Sharp has dedicated his time to sharing his faith and supporting others in theirs, serving as Presbytery Clerk to the International Presbytery of the Church of Scotland.
WOSM offers its deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, congregation, and the many friends around the world who knew him as a kind, wise and thoughtful man.
