What do Scouts from Honduras and El Salvador have in common? And most importantly, how can we help?

Meet Maria from Honduras and Antonio from El Salvador in this month's BackStage Stories. Both decided to take action and tackle a common problem in their countries, lack of quality education.

One of the biggest problems in Honduras is that in most public schools, children don't get  quality education, they don’t have school supplies, and classrooms are not equipped with proper teaching and learning equipment. As a Scout, I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. I started to think of ways to improve this situation.

My name is Maria, I'm from Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. I'm 20 years old, and am currently studying graphic design. I love to listen to music, go out with my friends as well as paint. This is my BackStage Story.

I decided to work towards realising SDG 4 because providing quality education will reduce social problems and motivate children and young people to complete their studies. My motivation comes from seeing them work hard for a better future and never giving up. Seeing them achieve their goals really inspires me.

My biggest challenge was selecting a classroom. I would have loved to help the whole school but due to the high cost of school supplies, it was impossible. My objective is to provide quality learning materials throughout the year.

I first heard about the Scout Donation Platform from my cousin, who found out about it at one of the Interamerican Leadership Trainings. And when I read about it again in my National Scout Organization’s Facebook page, I decided to give it a try and managed to raise USD280!

Helping others engages me with the reality in which we live and opens my eyes to the difficulties that exist in my community. There are many possible solutions to the challenges that we’re facing right now. I’m confident that with the help of like-minded people, especially those who donated to my project, we can really make a difference.
