The last week of April 2009 was dotted with a series of important events. Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia (PPM) hosted two regional events, in conjunction with the celebration of the 100 years of Scouting in Malaysia.

It started with the 4th Preparatory Meeting for the 23rd APR Scout Conference on 24th April 2009, attended by the regional team comprised of Regional Scout Committee member Prakorb Mukura, Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed and Director S Prassanna Shrivastava, who were joined by PPM Chief Scout Ybhg. Dato Seri Haji Shafie, Chief Commissioner Ybhg Dato Haji Kaharudin bin Momin, World Scout Committee member Eric Khoo, Host Organizing Committee Chairman Hj Bin Zakran bin Abdul Manan, International Commissioner Dr Mukhyddin Sarwani and members of the host organizing committee. At the meeting, both teams reviewed the progress of the conference preparations in all areas to make sure that the event will be purposeful and enjoyable.

This was followed by a commemorative function held on 25th April at a grand stadium in Kuala Lumpur that housed over 10,000 Scouts and Scout leaders. Former Malaysian Prime Minister and PPM Honorary President Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Yassin graced the function. In his address, the former prime minister hailed the values of Scouting and reiterated that once a Scout is always a Scout. The deputy prime minister expressed his full support to Scouting and vowed to assist PPM on behalf of the Malaysian government.

Also, in this occasion, Chairman Jejomar C Binay, presented the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Award for Distinguished Services to the former prime minister. On the part of PPM, former Prime Minister presented a special centenary medallion to past PPM Scout leaders to honour their contribution to the growth of Scouting in the country. Some of the recipients were Dato Arifin, former chief Scout Dato Sulaiman and many others.

A fast track two-day Regional Scout Committee meeting followed held from 25th to 26th April, presided by Chairman Jejomar Binay. With the active participation of all the members present, the meeting covered substantial discussions on regional issues including the review of the forthcoming conference, incorporation of the APR Scout Foundation, report of the Regional Director and Regional Treasurer, and regional awards. The committee also decided to hold the next APR summit in mid 2010, in preparation for the 2011 Brazil conference as well for the planning of the APR Plan beyond 2013.

While in Malaysia, the regional team made a visit to Hilton – Kuala Lumpur, the official conference venue, for an ocular inspection of facilities.
