Opening a Scout Troop for differently abled children in 'Meth Mihira'
Opening a Scout Troop for differently abled children in 'Meth Mihira'.
The Catholic Nun who runs this special education center in Koralawella Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, for physically and mentally handicapped children requested my assistance to open a Scout troop for their boys as they already have Girl Guides for Girls.
As I have seen a similar scout troop 'Makalaus' in Bronnoysund, Norway, I thought we can do it here in Sri lanka too.
We trained 2 specially trained lady teachers of the same centre as Scout Leaders.
16 boys were ready to be scouts, but all of them came from the poorest of the poor families. So to cover the cost of their uniforms was a problem for us.
So thanks to the assistance of our KFUK-KFUM scout friends in Bronnoysund' Norway, we were able to solve that easily. We came to know that, even their disabled 'Makalaus' troop also joined actively for the fund raising of this good deed.
Now they are doing well in scouting, attending even at 2 Annual District camps, participating in many activities together with the normal scouts and were able to win awards at the exhibition too, for their several exhibits, competiting with other scouts. Now they have another trained 2 Scout Leaders.
Last April they have enjoyed & experienced even a friendship camp with their sponsors 16 Scouts from Bronnysund and with the 4th Moratuwa Scouts in Scout Training Centre Mirigama, Sri Lanka.
They were able to earn their own money from the handicrafts they make such as wall hangings, table mats, cushions, friendship bands, greeting cards, though Bronnoysunds are still looking after them.
'...the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to others'.
; This saying of B-P in his last message echoes in my ears every time when I see the happy faces of these innocents in camps and in their institute 'Meth Mihira'.
