World Scouting is saddened to share that John Beresford, former Chairman of the World Scout Committee and a lifelong Scout who was beloved by friends and colleagues, has “gone home” peacefully at the age of 92.

John was the architect of Venture Scouting in the United Kingdom in the 1960s, having contributed to the Chief Scout's Advance Party Report, a landmark publication published in 1966 which aimed to transform Scouting in the country as a relevant, progressive and inclusive educational experience. John served in various roles in The Scout Association, including International Commissioner before going on to become a Vice President.

Following a term as a member of the European Scout Committee, John was elected to World Committee and served as its Vice Chairman from 1985 to 1988, and as its Chairman from 1988 to 1990. Described by those who knew him well as a “true gentleman” and a “giant of World Scouting”, John presided as Chairman at a challenging time in the history of the Movement with the rebirth of Scouting in Central and Eastern Europe. He went on to serve on the Constitutions Committee and remained actively involved and interested in Scouting until his passing.

John was an inspirational champion of Scouting’s values and was a humble and empathic individual who dedicated his life to strengthening the Scout Movement. He was awarded the Bronze Wolf in 1992 as World Scouting’s highest honour, recognising a lifetime of achievement, commitment and service of the most exceptional character.

John peacefully passed away on 30 November 2020 in his hometown of Croydon, United Kingdom. World Scouting sends its deepest sympathies and condolences to John’s family, friends and colleagues who knew him as an extraordinary and visionary leader.
