Save East Kolkata Wetlands Project

To the East of Kolkata, we have a set of wetlands of international importance, spread over an area of 12,500 hectares. They are the largest ensemble of waste water wetlands, entirely man-made,to purify waste water from the city of Kolkata by the practice of growing fish. The 'East Kolkata Wetlands' is the only natural sewage treatment plant in the whole world and provides the city with approx. 10,000 tons of fresh fish yearly. They are only such example of wetlands in the world. But the East Kolkata Wetlands are in danger of destruction, with builders unlawfully making buildings by filling up these wetlands-the law prevents any land use change in this area.Real Estate is driving out the original settlers of this land, when that is downright illegal. Nobody should be allowed to build houses and create concrete jungles in this wetland areas. And thus to safeguard the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), especially to spread awareness and sensitize the citizens of Kolkata regarding this environmental issue, this post has been created, so as to reach to a majority of people.
Be with us as a world scout and please try to create awareness amongst more of your friends because it is our duty to love and protect nature.
