World Scouting releases HeForShe action kit
World Scouting has deepened its commitment to the UN’s flagship gender equality campaign with the release of the HeForShe action kit to help Scouts across the world become advocates for gender equality and commit to HeForShe by 2020.
The action kit was developed in five languages in collaboration with UN Women to encourage Scouts to think about gender issues and understand when and how they can act. It is designed for use in all kinds of Scouting activities, from hiking to training sessions, and can be adapted depending on the maturity of the young people involved.
“We want Scouts all over the world to understand what HeForShe stands for and show their full support for gender equality,” said WOSM Secretary General Ahmad Alhendawi. “This action kit provides Scouts with crucial information that will allow them to understand the importance of taking action to create a gender equal world.”
The initiative is designed to enable Scouts to understand what HeForShe stands for and why they should act, make their own commitment to HeForShe and work out what they can do to mobilise others to take action and spread the word about gender equality. Building on the expertise of UN Women, the action kit explores issues such as violence, health, identity, education, work and politics suggesting different activities and games that will help Scouts of differing ages recognise the difficulties associated with gender.
HeForShe is a global effort to engage men and boys in removing the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential and encourage everyone to work together to reshape society in a positive way. The campaign was launched by then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson in September 2014.
The action kit is available in English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian and can be accessed through www.scout.org/heforshe.
