The replenishment campaign for 2018-2020 aims to raise the funds needed to deliver GPE 2020 (Global Partnership for Education), the partnership’s strategic plan, and increase global education financing to ensure SDG 4 can be achieved. Macky Sall, President of Senegal and Emmanuel Macron, President of France co-hosted the Global Partnership for Education Financing Conference in Dakar, Senegal on February 1-2, 2018 as a way to culminate the campaign.

Pierre Johty, a Scout leader at Les Scouts et Guides de France and a youth ambassador ONE attended the conference in Senegal. The ONE Youth Ambassador programme is a one-year volunteer programme which is entering its fifth year in Europe, youth ambassadors are a team of young volunteer activists who give voice to key large-scale campaigns), attended the conference in Senegal. Pierre gave an inspiring keynote speech where he highlighted the role played by Scouting in peace-building.

We talked to him briefly and here is a summary of his participation:

“From January the 29th to February the 2nd, I had the chance to travel to Dakar, the capital of Senegal, in order to attend the Replenishment Conference of the Global Partnership for Education. I had been selected to be part of the youth delegation in order to share our views on education as young people from different countries. On the last day of the conference, we gave our Youth Solidarity Statement to the leaders of the world with our recommendations for tomorrow's education. I had been selected because I was a ONE youth ambassador at that time but, during one speech I gave on “education in emergencies”, I also spoke about the scout movement, another organization I am proud to be part of. I particularly stressed the role of non-formal education and especially the Scout movement’s actions in peace processes. I talked about the Messenger of Peace initiative and the contribution of boy and girl scouts around the world to resolve conflicts such as in Northern Ireland, in the great Lakes Region, or in Haiti. More generally as part of one French Scout association “Les Scouts et Guides de France”,I have the feeling that I’m part of a tremendous change based on the development of a peace ambassadors’ generation. In other words, the scout movement is based on non-formal education, one of the best ways to educate boys and girls in order to support individual development, inner peace and peace in the world are inextricably linked!
