From July 3-5, a conference on the future on the European Volunteer Service is taking place in Tallinn, in the frame of the EU Estonian Presidency. The aim of the conference is to establish trends in youth work and volunteering and translate those trends into a Foresight Paper outlining the needs, current realities and dreams of young people and Europe. Today, on the 4th July, Martin Meier, representative of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, delivered a key note on volunteering and participated in a panel discussion.

Martin Meier: “Scouting in Europe engages with several thousands of volunteers to deliver educational activities to 1.6 Million young people and children. We estimate, that we are currently missing about 50 000 volunteers to ensure all children on waiting lists can take part in scouting activities. We therefore call upon the European Member States and the European Commission to ensure that all young people and adult can easily access to volunteering opportunities in their communities and abroad through a better harmonisation of volunteering policy in Europe. The competences acquired through volunteering needs to be further recognised, not only for those who take part in European mobility programmes but for all volunteers. The future European Programmes supporting volunteering need to be ambitious to build up a Europe of active citizens and engaged young people”.

The new European Solidarity Corps launched by President of the European Commission Juncker is an additional opportunity for Scouts and all young people in Europe to engage themselves for a better Europe.
Discover the reaction of Scouting to the Commission's recent proposal for a legal basis for the European Solidarity Corps. We welcome the new initiative in favour of young people and Europe. But at the same time, we believe that the programme can be made more functional by making some modifications.
