Scout Groups in Nis collect help for the people affected by floods
After the most severe flooding on records affected the central and western parts of Serbia and after the government decided to declare the national state of emergency, the members and volunteers of the Scout Organization of Serbia decided to help in many different ways. In the city of Nis, the cities crisis management team decided to contact the local scout council in order to organize the collection of help donated by the public. On a very short notice, all the eight groups in the city opened their premises and organized the collection of donations. On Friday May 17, all the groups engaged in a campaign in social media and shared the information on their groups’ pages and on their personal profiles. This proved to be a great success and starting at 9am on Saturday May 18, the groups began collecting, sorting and registering all the donations brought by the people. As the day was passing, many of the groups dens became overcrowded with boxes of food, bottles of water, bags of clothes, packages of baby diapers and many other things brought by the generous people. As some scouts were busy welcoming and helping some of the people carry the packets their brought, the others were busy with classifying the donations and packing it for transport. All the collected help was transported to the Red Cross storage from where it was distributed to the affected areas. Since the stream of people that were bringing the help, many of the groups stayed late in order to complete their tasks and the collection continued in the following days. It is estimated that in a single day, the scouts in Nis have collected and classified more than 11 tons of help donated by the citizens and scouts. Through this activity, the scouts showed once again that they are, as one of the scouts said, “Prepared to create a better world”
