Messengers of Peace Community Project

One of the Scouters in the Beaver section of Castleknock Scouts works in the Dublin 15 Hospice and had a great idea to involve the Beaver Scouts in an annual Easter fund raising activity. The idea was to knit and assemble chicks containing small chocolate eggs and sell them in aid of the hospice.
The Beaver Scouts were very keen to get involved and, right from their very first knitting/sewing lesson on the 5th March 2014, they worked hard knitting, sewing, filling and decorating the cutest little chicks possible. Each beaver spent about 7 hours each on the project not including the knitting at home! Along the way the cub scouts were invited to join the project and the fun.
On March 27th the first batch of 24 chicks were delivered to the hospice for sale. The Daycare team were so delighted to see the support from the scouts. For those used to dealing with little steps, they recognised the wonderful work of everyone involved and the therapists, nurses and all the workers were thrilled with the chicks.
The Beaver and Cub scouts who delivered the chicks got VIP treatment. They were shown around the hospice. They went in to see the day room, the oratory, reception and even got to operate and use the wheelchair lift!
But the best news was that €15 was made within a few minutes of the chicks being handed over and they sold out in full in no time.
The Beaver Scouts continued to make chicks between this, and their last meeting before Easter on 9th April. At this meeting they set up a stall to sell more chicks and also sold them to the parents who had been invited along to witness an Easter egg hunt and investiture.
All in all 100 chicks have been sold, and €200 raised for the hospice and the plan is to make this an annual event. Some eager beavers are working on the next lot for 2015!
