Climate Change Fun Day

The Limpopo Scouts hosted a Climate Change Fun Day at Mohlaba, Mopani for 420 Scouts residing in the areas of Nkowankowa, Burgersdorp, Lenyenye and Shiluvane. Once again this formed part of the Climate change annual challenge mentioned in the Free State project.
The aim of the day was to expose children to issues surrounding climate change but also to indicate new thinking and solutions in this field.
Learners from Merensky High School and The King’s Court High School presented their Tri-tech projects to the Scouts. Projects presented included decreasing reliance on conventional means of cooling/heating houses (e.g. air-conditioning) by building houses with straw bales to serve as an insulating material; using solar energy to motor an escalator for baggage at school hostels; generating electricity using a waterwheel; decreasing pollution by utilising empty cans as candle holders; converting vegetation into a gas which can decrease reliance on electricity; explaining the effects of air pollution on the ozone; the effects of unsafe disposal of batteries on human and environmental health and also safer ways of disposing of used batteries; and using dishwater as a means of watering gardens without affecting the health and produce of plants.
The day was a tremendous success and it is believed that it will be repeated in the future.
