Annual challenge award Free State

Clean-up campaign
In June a cleaning up campaign was held at Ed-U College where a sports day was held to celebrate Youth Day. About 200 children attended the day which was enjoyed by all.

Food for Life Garden
In August a Food for Life garden was established at the SSA Free State head office, 2 Peter Crescent Welkom. The vegetables are grown for the House of Hope (an orphanage for HIV/Aids infected and affected children). The food garden was made at the head office as the house where the House of Hope is situated has not enough room to create gardens. The garden has ten vegetable beds which will be used to grow Spinach, Beetroot, Carrots and Beans. The beds were dug and filled with compost and manure. 40 Scouts from the Goldfields district attended the day and were given lunch. The Starter Food for Life badge was explained to the participants. The Food for Life badge is part of a three stage program within the Scout program where Scouts themselves grow food gardens to ensure food security.
The seeds have been planted and are starting to germinate.

Two day seminar
A two day seminar was held in Welkom. This was attended by 28 cubs and 105 Scouts from the Goldfields district giving a total of 133 children. 8 adult leaders attended the weekend to assist with the running of the bases and supervision of the children.
The activities were run by the adult leaders from the groups attending the weekend and divided into Cub and Scout activities. The weekend fulfilled the requirements for the Climate Change 2011 challenge for Cubs and Scouts. The following bases were done:

Anti-litter campaign
Sources of clean water and air
"Save it" campaign at home
Potential environmental disasters
Alien plants
Harvest water
Water cycle
Outdoor code - Be green
Household waste audit
Green project - See green
Household electricity or fuels audit
Household carbon emissions audit
Water use audit

This project was different in that it required those running the activities to think out of the normal Scouting activities. The children responded very well to the activities which were carried out. The weekend was enjoyed by all.
