THE 6TH AFRICAN SCOUT DAY CELEBRATIONS

The 13th March of every year is set out for the celebration of the African Scout Day. The date emanated following the resolutions of the Ministers of the then Organization of Africa Unity (OAU) – now African Union (AU), meeting in its Sixty-second (62nd) ordinary session in Addis Ababa from 21st to 3rd June, 1995 to set aside the 13th of March as the African Scout Day.
In September 2010, the Africa Regional Scout Committee resolved to give the celebration a regional outlook, by assigning a National Scout Organization within her region to host the main celebration. Scouts and scouters throughout the region have been celebrating this day along with their partners, who meet to showcase their achievements and promote the “spirit of world kinship, cooperation and mutual assistance amongst Scout Organizations within the Region” (WOSM Constitution, Article XXI.1.A), and NSO’s registered under the African region take turns in hosting the event. After the successful holding of the celebrations in Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Swaziland and Uganda in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively, the 2016 Africa Scout Day celebrations being the 6th in the series right from inception was held between 9th – 13th March 2016, hosted by the Ghana Scouts Association, with a 3days International Youth camp at AFUA Southerland Children’s Park, and the Baden Powel Hall, Accra, Ghana, respectively.
The theme of the 2016 ASD celebration was “Empowering Scouts for the Development of Africa” This is in recognition of the movement’s commitment to enabling 100 million young people to be active citizens creating positive change in their communities and in the world based on shared values. It is also a clarion call for Scouts to renew their commitment to the conservation of the environment and promotion of a culture of peace all over the world.
This is a report of the event which brought together Scouts from different countries in Africa and beyond for a 3-day International Youth Camp and Youth Engagement For Good Governance Training; during which they undertook numerous learning and community service activities, while the All Africa Scout Day celebration being the grand finale came on fourth day at the BADEN POWELL HALL, Accra Ghana on Saturday, 12 March 2016.
Participants for the 6th African Scout Day celebration arrived as contingents from the various NSO’s and NSA’s in the region via the various source of entrance into the country; Air, Land, Sea and rail. They were registered accordingly and designated into their various tents. Countries in the region who pulled about 150 scouts from about 20 NSO’s and NSA’s to mark the event included: Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Cote D’ivore, Niger Republic, Nigeria, Togo, Cameroun, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Swaziland, and The Republic of Korea who were our special guest from the Asian – Pacific Region.
