Australia celebrates 'The Year of the Scout'

1. Jan 2008

2008 is the Centenary of Australian Scouting and has been declared The Year of the Scout by the Australian Government.

To mark this great achievement, Australia Post has issued three Scout stamps on 19 February which feature images that capture the spirit and camaraderie of Scouts Australia. A 50 cent stamp depicts Joeys, Cubs and Scouts in an action shot that highlights the resourcefulness and teamwork sentiment so strong within the Scouting culture.

The international stamps feature an image of World Scouting that depicts the goodwill of Scouts from around the world (including an Australian Scout in an orange shirt), and a commemorative profile of international founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell.

Australia Post Group Manager Philatelic Noel Leahy is delighted with the Scouting in Australia series. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Australia Post to play a role in reminding the community just how important Scouting Australia is for our youth. For over 100 years, Scouts have instilled in young Australians leadership, teamwork, self-reliance, resourcefulness, bushcraft, mateship and fun. It is an honour to acknowledge this through the Scouting in Australia series,” said Mr. Leahy.

Also as part of their Centenary celebrations, Scouts Australia has embarked on a nation-wide communications campaign to which various media organisations have lent their support. The campaign includes TV and cinema commercials, posters, advertisements on the side of public transport and newspaper ads. As Australia is a very multicultural nation, Scouts Australia has developed parts of their campaign in eight languages.

Scouts Australia is one of 6 National Scout Organizations celebrating their national Centenary in 2008. Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand and South Africa are also celebrating theirs.
