Happy Founder’s Day!

22 February has always been a time to remember and celebrate the birthday of Baden-Powell, our Founder, the force behind Scouting and all that it stands for today. His vision has influenced countless generations of young people globally, providing opportunities for them to experience self-discovery through an array of activities and impact-driven initiatives.

This day is also deeply personal to each of us, as we fondly recollect Scouting’s heritage, and memories of special moments in Scouting - our first Promise, new friendships, and many activities filled with adventure and fun! As we kick off 2020, there is much to celebrate and look forward to.

Currently, more than five million volunteers have helped the Movement reach more than 54 million young people around the world. Over the years, Scouting has evolved significantly – it’s what it means to be a Movement. In this new decade, Scouting is dedicated to creating impactful and life-changing experiences for young people, through various programmes, events and activities.

Scouts for SDGs  demonstrates the relevance of Scouting in today’s rapidly changing world. As a mobilisation initiative, Scouts for SDGs is instrumental in enabling young people to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, encouraging them to do their duty as active global citizens and agents of change in their respective communities. To date, we’ve logged more than six million local service actions, 1.4 billion service hours and 50 million contributions globally. This is truly amazing, demonstrating that Scouting is a social force for good.

The World Non-Formal Education Forum held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, together with our global partners was a resounding success, highlighting the Movement as a strong advocate of the importance of non-formal education, and the role it plays in supporting the overall educational journey and growth of young people worldwide.

This year also marks a special milestone as the Movement celebrates 100 years of the World Scout Bureau, World Scout Jamborees and World Scout Conferences. This year’s conference will take place this August in Sharm El-Sheikh, Eqypt. Aptly themed “Bridging the World”, the Conference and Youth Forum will bring together thousands of leaders from 171 National Scout Organizations and global partners to shape the future the world’s leading educational youth movements.

Additionally, WOSM Services is continuing to create a more cohesive working environment through volunteer consultants and working units engaged in the production of resources, training and e-learning, covering everything from Diversity and Inclusion to Adults in Scouting.

As the Movement expands and grows, the ripple effect of Scouting can be seen through local actions and community service in 224 countries and territories.

This Founder’s Day, let us remember the purpose of Scouting: to contribute to the self-development of young people, by continuing to provide opportunities for them to look beyond their own needs to the wider needs of humanity. As Lord Robert Baden-Powell once said, “the real way to gain happiness is to give it to others.”

On behalf of World Scouting, we wish you all a happy Founder's Day!
