The 2017 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 23) opened on Monday, 6 November, with over 20,000 participants contributing to discussions on climate change. Among them is a young and enthusiastic Scout delegation, representing Scouting worldwide, and showcasing the important contributions Scouting makes to protect the environment and achieve sustainability in local communities.

This year’s COP 23 is held in Bonn, Germany. Within the negotiation area, three Scout delegates are taking part in the official discussions. In the civil society area, German Scouts have set up a tent and are offering Scouting activities with an environmental focus to all participants. Their common goal is to showcase Scouting’s contribution in the creation of a better world through environmental education methods, peace education and local commitment to building resilient communities.

And here are the WOSM delegates for the first week of COP23:

DenjaScouts-COP23
Denja is a 20-year-old Scout from Germany, currently studying geography in Cologne. She is new to COP and very excited to be part of the WOSM DeIegation. She has been active with the German Scout Federation’s COP23 group, which organises events and an exhibition for the civil society in Rheinaue. Denja learnt a lot about climate and climate change during her stay in South Africa last year, where she also developed a keen interest in the topic.
Through representing World Scouting at COP23, she hopes to have the chance to talk to people about climate change and share information about the projects Scouts worldwide are doing to protect their local environments.

Cyrlil-Scouts-COP23
Cyril is a 25-year-old French Scout. He is new to the COP negotiations, but is very interested in the topics discussed. This interest started when he was a young Scout, and later developed through other commitments.
He now works as a consultant for local authorities on their climate and energy policies. His participation at COP23 allows him to see the other side of the fight against climate change, which complements the ones Scouts experience on local scale.

Fabien-Scouts-COP23
Fabien is also a French Scout, who has participated in two COPs as a member of WOSM delegations. At this COP, he is trying to make Scouting’s work onsite as productive as possible, given his background knowledge of the entire process of climate negotiations. His experience in COPs enabled the delegation to be well prepared in terms of the positions WOSM is advocating when it comes to climate change. Fabien graduated a few years ago with a degree in political sciences and is now working on sustainability issues in Germany.
