MESSENGERS OF PEACE TEAM PHILIPPINES GATHERING
Boy Scouts of the Philippines being the 3rd largest NSO in APR after Indonesia and India has 10 Scouting Regions serving a total of 118 Local Scout Councils nationwide. After a series of National and Regional Scouting Events promoting Peace projects and initiatives in particular, understanding “Messengers of Peace” Service Projects and Initiatives at the Unit and Sub-Unit level still requires further training, capacity building and awareness campaign among local and regional leaders nationwide.
The project seeks to capacitate local and regional leaders to carry out and effectively implement “Messengers of Peace” service projects and initiatives at the level of the Sponsoring Institutions, Districts and Councils and be able to contribute in the growing online community of peace advocates and network among other Messengers of Peace online to share resources and best practices.
The project will provide an avenue to learn more about Messengers of Peace and be able to explore ways and means to engage Local Communities in addressing challenges related to community development, dialogue and specific peace projects while sharing inspiring stories among young people to take action.
To date, BSP has more than 1,231 registered Scouts who signed-up online to the www.scoutmessenger.org prior to its transfer to the new URL www.scout.org through the help of the BSP MOP Ambassadors Network, a facebook-based online community, which aims to promote “Messengers of Peace” service projects and initiatives. This group is composed of active young people, Rover Scouts and Leaders from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao having a total 55 members respectively. On its own undertaking, this group manages to promote MOP in their respective areas and provinces, producing their own promotional materials, resources and designing their own activities about peace education.
Despite of these local initiatives, BSP-MOP Leaders still lacks formal training orientation since their knowledge about MOP is very limited based only on online information given to them by the National MOP Coordinator. Considering vast geographical area and numerous islands that composed the Philippines, it will be very effective and beneficial to everyone, that representatives to join this project are carefully selected representing all 10 Scouting Region of the BSP.
Scouts and leaders from all Scouting regions and various Local Councils at grassroots level, with varied social, geographic and economic background will be the beneficiaries from this project. Schools and communities will benefit from service projects and peace initiatives of the project.
The proposed project aims to train, capacitate and appoint young people and leaders to promote Messengers of Peace (MoP) service projects and initiatives at sub-national level.
1. Organize and conduct training for 45 young people and leaders who will compose the local MOP Team in the Region and Local Councils to lead in the promotion and MOP Service Projects and Initiatives in their area.
2. The MOP Team shall coordinate at the National Office to document and report MOP projects that will expand online membership registration to the WOSM MoP Platform at the scout.org website.
3. Organize MOP Teams at the Regional and Council Scouting events to promote Messengers of Peace online.
