Today we are excited to announce a major milestone with the launch of the Earth Tribe - a new initiative for environmental education that will engage young people, both Scouts and non-Scouts, in a global movement for environmental action. The Earth Tribe will replace the World Scout Environment Programme, which was conceptualised in 2008 to enhance our work around environmental education with young people in Scouting.

The Earth Tribe is an exciting new offering as part of the Better World Framework to support young people in developing the key competencies needed to become environmental leaders. The initiative, which focuses on the environment and sustainability, also builds on a commitment through Scouts for SDGs to mobilize the Movement to contribute towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Through the Earth Tribe, young people can learn about how their personal choices and habits have an impact on the environment, and how they can take action in their communities through a series of engaging Earth Tribe Challenges to preserve and protect our planet.

The launch of the Earth Tribe, which coincides with World Environment Day, is designed to ensure that Scouting continues to offer a relevant and self-progressive education experience that tackles some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing our planet, such as the urgency of climate change, reliance on fossil fuels, rising consumption habits, and a loss of nature and biodiversity.

The new initiative is the result of extensive input and contributions from youth, educational experts, volunteers and nearly 100 National Scout Organizations (NSOs) from across the Movement. These insights were gathered during the 24th World Scout Jamboree, World Non-Formal Education Forum, Regional Scout Conferences, and a recent workshop on the future of education in Scouting.

The initiative has also benefited from a comprehensive alignment with the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development learning objectives as part of the Better World Framework, and a full review by some of the world’s leading environmental organisations, including WWF and UN Environment as well as National Scout Organizations from across the Scout Movement.. Our continued engagement with these organisations will enable NSOs and partners to continue to support each other around environmental education and awareness activities.

Whether at home or in the community, Scouts and Adult Leaders are invited to join the global Earth Tribe community by taking part in a series of Earth Tribe Challenges focused on four learning paths related to environment and sustainability. Among the first Challenges to be featured as part of the Earth Tribe are the Champions for Nature Challenge designed in partnership with WWF, the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge designed in partnership with UN Environment, and the Scouts Go Solar Challenge designed in partnership with Solafrica.

As the Earth Tribe continues to grow as a platform for environmental action, more Challenges and gamification elements involving partners will be added to the initiative, providing even more opportunities for young people to earn recognition badges and become champions for sustainability.

A series of new Earth Tribe implementation manuals and Challenge action kits have been developed to enable NSOs and Adult Leaders to introduce the new initiative within their existing national Youth Programme. The tools, resources and materials, along with information about the Earth Tribe Challenges are available at
