SG Ahmad Alhendawi and Chairperson Craig Turpie at DX26APR, JOTA-JOTI 2018 in Manila, Philippines
The Boy Scouts of the Philippines, through the grace of its official amateur radio club, the DX1BSP, conducted the Jamboree-on-the-Air/Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTA-JOTI) with WOSM Secretary-General, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi; WSC Chairperson, Mr. Craig Turpie, and other officials, together with the cooperation of the Philippine Amateur Radio Association, Inc. (PARA). The station used the callsign DX26APR, in line with the held 26th Asia-Pasific Region Scout Conference in the Philippine International Convention Centre, Manila.
On that day, the station was operated by Scouts who are also amateur radio operators, like Angelo, 4G1BHZ; Michael, 4I1AZN; Bryan, 4G1AMD; Joseph, 4G1BGX, together with their mentor, Mr. Jonathan Dizon, DV1YKM; leaders such as Vice-President for Luzon, Boy Scouts of the Philippines and President, DX1BSP Hon. Sofronio Leonardo Ona, DU1ON, and ham radio enthusiats from PARA. Ms. Dolly Gonzales, DU1DLY hosted the program on-aire. After that, Mr. Turpie delivered his speech for scouts and guides all over the airwaves.
Scouts are taught to be responsible, to play an active role in society, and contribute to positive change. (Turpie, 2018)
Chairperson Craig Turpie emphasised the possible changes Scouts can make, as a contribution to society. He also focused on the traditional way of communication, which are still prevalent in these fun times, hence, the JOTA-JOTI. After that, Mr. Alhendawi delivered his message.
Unity of our Movement should never be taken for granted. (Alhendawi, 2018)
Secretary-General Alhendawi described JOTA-JOTI as the 'bond' Scouts all over the world has, through means of radio and internet. The JOTA-JOTI aims to provide 'global understanding' and unity, according to him, as part of the development goals in Scouting. But that unity should never be abused, said Alhendawi in his statement.
After the two World Scouting leaders, the PARA Chief Operating Officer, Ret. USN Roberto Vicencio, DU1VHY gave his warm regards to Scouts and ham radio operators who volunteered for the posibility of the Jamboree on schools and institutions across the archipelago. Hon. Sofronio Leonardo Ona also gave his speech for those who participated to the activity. Ona wished the Scouts good luck and enjoyment of the hobby.
The DX1BSP also gave an incentive prize for schools and clubs who will gain the highest points for the Philippines. The prize is a high-frequency (HF) radio and a digital dual-band radio (VHF/UHF) radio. There is also a photo contest for photographers present in the activity.
