Food for Thought... A few nights ago the Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan (ASA) had their New Year’s celebrations. When the party was over, the president of ASA and his friend spent two hours driving around the city. Why? Because there was a lot of leftover chicken and rice after the party, and they were looking for homeless people with whom to share the food. Now, some people might put this down to ‘seasonal goodwill’, but not us. We see two scouts, going above and beyond what was expected of them, doing what they can to help other people. One simple act of kindness was all that it was, but it made a big difference to all of people they met. Messengers of Peace isn’t just about neckerchiefs and funding for large-scale projects. Messengers of Peace is an initiative designed to remind us of who we are and what we do. We are Scouts who are working to create a better world. It doesn’t always take months of planning, it doesn’t always take a lot of money, but a simple act of kindness, or ‘service’ as Lord Baden Powell put it, always makes a difference. You might not see the impact straight away, in fact you might never see the impact, but the fact remains that our actions, no matter how small and seemingly insignificant, can have a positive impact on the lives of others. As we all enjoy the holiday celebrations and prepare to ring in the New Year, take a minute and reflect. What did you do this year to help other people? More importantly, looking forward, what can you do next year? Remember, it doesn’t take weeks of planning or a huge budget – it is easy to help an individual, a group, or even a community. Whether you call it a ‘Messengers of Peace project’, a ‘service act’, a ‘random act of kindness’, or just ‘doing something nice for someone else’, you can choose to make a difference. Scout or Scouter, we are all members of the same organisation, we are all part of the global movement that is working together. Please, do something small. Play your part. Create a better world.
