World Scouting is saddened by the news of death and destruction in central Mexico, which was violently shaken by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake yesterday. So far, it has claimed over 200 lives and destroyed countless buildings and infrastructure.

For the past few days, Scouts from Veracruz, Xalapa, Coatzocoalcos and Minatitlán have been working tirelessly to support relief efforts after an 8.1-magnitude earthquake hit the southern coast of Mexico earlier this month.

Following yesterday’s earthquake, Scouts immediately acted as soon as it was safe, working with other local groups to provide much-needed assistance to the local authorities. They are currently supporting emergency services and rescue efforts, the collection and delivery of food and medical supplies, and traffic control.

As the dire situation unfolds, the amount of help needed has skyrocketed. Scouts have been reaching out to members of the public who can support ongoing efforts by donating blood to hospitals, delivering food and drinks to rescuers, coordinating donation campaigns, packing and delivering essential items and medical supplies, and providing tools for clearing rubble.

To further ease the situation, The Scouts of Mexico have turned their headquarters into a collection and operations centre, whereas The Girl Scouts of Mexico have offered their headquarters as a temporary shelter for survivors.

Secretary General, Ahmad Alhendawi, expressed his concern and support for the Scouts in Mexico in a Tweet earlier today.

An emergency fund of USD10,000 was released to the National Scout Organization and more will be raised in the coming weeks via project on Scout Donation Platform (see bellow).
