18 January 2017, Nairobi - Kenya: 20 National Messengers of Peace (MoP) Coordinators from different National Scout Organizations (NSOs) in the Africa Region have gathered in Nairobi for the Regional MoP workshop. The main goal of the workshop is to build capacity of National Coordinators to support National Scout Organizations to implement the MoP Initiative. Participants to this workshop will join the Regional MoP Core Team to grow the sense of ownership of the process by National Scout Organizations to effectively deliver the Messengers of Peace Initiative in Africa.

Also present at the workshop are 5 Africa Scout Youth Advisors, 3 members of the Africa Scout Committee, Regional Director and staff of the World Scout Bureau Africa Support Centre and the Vice chairperson of the World Scout Committee.

The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen knowledge and skills on MoP Network & Project Management to support NSO/As; identify the scope to further strengthen Scouting and communities through MoP projects; review the role of NSO MoP Coordinators and expectations; prepare a regional and national action plans on the MoP Initiative until 2018; and to explain development and success stories of the MoP Initiative (Network & Fund) that has taken place in the last three years.

Mr. Jeremy Naivasha, Regional Treasurer and Chairperson of the Regional MoP Decision Committee said, “We are very proud of the work you doing. You have contributed greatly to the growth that MoP has realized so far. The key thing for us is to increase the impact - lifetime change - that MoP is having on peoples lives of communities and individuals.”

The Regional Director, Mr. Frederic Tutu Kama-Kama reiterated the World Scout Bureau Africa Support Centre’s commitment to continue supporting the Coordinators to better work with their NSOs to deliver the MoP programme in the region. He implored on the participants to take this opportunity to reflect and challenge themselves on how to become better MoP ambassadors and how they can support their NSOs to develop better and more impactful MoP projects.

On her part, Ms. Jemima Nartey, Vice Chairperson of the World Scout Committee encouraged the participants to tell the positive impactful stories that Scouts are having across Africa saying, “Let us use our stories, our pictures to impact the world and multiply the impact of Scouting. Messengers of Peace is who we are, what we do each day. That means that each one of us, since we made the promise and decide to put on the scarf, we’ve always been Messengers of Peace. I urge you to be diplomatic, be strategic, be humble, but be courageous as well because what you are doing is right.”

Some key outcomes expected from the workshop will be to develop a harmonized regional plan to support NSA/Os to implement the MoP initiative; develop objectives of the MoP Network for Africa until the next Regional Conference in 2018; and to enhance social impact and visibility of the MoP Initiative for greater social impact

Participants will be expected to play the key role of multipliers within their NSO and zones, have the capacity and be available to support their NSO leadership and to support Regional, Zonal and National training activities when required.
