Not every Sea Scout in our Ship 1942 gets the Monday, "Veterans Day" Holiday off from school on 11 November 2013. Some do however, as our Sea Scout unit crosses several counties and States. All joined the Skipper as we travel by foot from one Washington, DC Memorial to another - placing “Wreaths” at the Boy Scout Memorial, the WWI Memorial, WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. All scouts worn their Uniform Sea Scout cracker-jack whites with comfortable walking shoes. This is “service beyond self” for the sacrifices our Armed Forces that gave their all, so you can live in the greatest country on the planet earth and enjoy the freedoms you do in the United States. Skipper always says "Don't give up the ship!" Tradition has it that Captain James Lawrence said these heroic words after being mortally wounded in the engagement between his ship, the “U.S. frigate Chesapeake”, and “HMS Shannon” on 1 June 1813. As the wounded and dying Captain Lawrence was carried below decks, he ordered, "Tell the men to fire faster! Don't give up the Ship!" Although “Chesapeake” was forced to surrender, Captain Lawrence's words lived on as a rallying cry during the War of 1812.
