Carrie Gibson form Greenock, Scotland has accomplished the ultimate challenge – reaching the top of Mount Everest. Carrie reached the summit at approximately 1am BST on Wednesday 16 May and she is only the fifth Scottish woman ever to do so.

This fantastic achievement is the culmination of two years of intensive training in Scotland and further afield and a fitting reward for Carrie and all the people who have supported her both on Everest and back home.

The Everest climb is part of the Scottish Scouts Seven Summits Expedition and also the most amazing way for Carrie and the team to celebrate Scouting’s Centenary. Carrie explains what expedition means to her and how Scouting has shaped her life.

“This trip for me is about giving something back. I have gained so much already from Scouting, it has given me chances to travel, to meet new people, and the chance to develop into the person I am today. I owe a lot to scouting I want everyone to know just how much you can gain from Scouting and the Everest Expedition is the best way I can imagine to spread the word.

In today’s society young people need avenues to express themselves and employers need something more that just academic qualifications. It’s about goal–setting, problem solving and never losing sight of where you want to go. Adventure is in our nature. We each explore and test our limits in different ways through Scouting, and throughout life and we can all set our own Everest.”

Carrie was climbing with Keith Armour from Edinburgh, Keith managed to climb to 8000m. The expedition also included three other members of Scottish Scouting trekking to the South (Nepalese) Everest Base Camp and going up Kala Patar (5554m), and six tackling Island Peak (6189m).
