Pictionary, campfires and the Sustainable Development Goals

With its vibrantly colorful interior, the Better World tent is an interactive exhibition of World Scouting’s programmes at the 24th World Scout Jamboree. The educational space helps young people understand their contribution in creating a better world by offering them a chance to directly interact with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and learn what practical actions they can take to get us closer to achieving a peaceful world.

An average of 2,000 visitors enter the exhibition each day, exploring and learning about World Scouting’s programmes on the environment, humanitarian action, diversity & inclusion, how we keep Scouts safe from harm, creating a culture of peace through dialogue and much more.

From learning how to start a Messengers of Peace (MoP) project to creating art for an anti-bullying campaign, activities at the Better World tent focus on broadening Scouts’ knowledge on the variety of programmes that make up Scouting in different countries. Here, Scouts are able to earn virtual badges

“Scouting gave me the option to dream. It changed my life,” said 17 year-old Sheida from the Philippines around the campfire during her Scout Talks at the Better World tent. Taking place twice each day, Scout Talks are an opportunity for visitors to gather around a campfire in the center of the exhibition and listen to an inspiring story from a fellow Scout.

Sheida shared a very personal journey with Scouting, and how it transformed her life from one on the streets of Manilla to one of ambition and big dreams through the Ticket to Life programme.

“Seeing the engagement and interest from Scouts, shows us that we still need to strengthen our efforts on making sure that awareness around the SDGs reach each and every Scout. It is very important to help them understand that they can be part of this change as individuals, and it can be small steps. The moment you change, is the moment you contribute to sustainable development," said Senior Manager, Educational Initiatives and MoP Networks, Cynthia Márquez.

At the Better World tent, Scouts are able to earn virtual badges that act as a starting point towards obtaining the actual badge back home. The space has also been holding night gatherings welcoming young people and leaders to share experiences and engage in discussions around the campfire on various topics.

By introducing Scouts to innovative ways of contributing to the SDGs, the Better World tent has been a popular attraction among participants at the 24th World Scout Jamboree, ensuring that visitors leaving the exhibition know exactly how to be active citizens to create a positive change in their communities.
