As part of World Scouting’s ongoing commitment to child and youth protection, Secretary General Ahmad Alhendawi signed a Letter of Agreement this week with Najat Maalla M’jid, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children.

The Letter of Agreement sets out a framework for collaboration to enhance WOSM’s Safe from Harm child and youth protection policies, strengthen the participation of children and adolescents in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) review process, and work together to advocate for children’s rights and protection.

The Special Representative visited the World Scout Jamboree in 2019 as her first mission after taking office in July 2019, where she learned about WOSM’s safeguarding measures and listened to young people’s views and concerns, particularly related to the SDGs and social issues.

Since then, the Special Representative’s Office and WOSM have worked together on the production of Safe from Harm webinars and resources, including the endorsement of an Anti-Bullying Toolkit for young people and volunteers. This collaboration also enabled WOSM to take part in the recent Civil Society Forum on Violence against Children and get involved in the #CovidUnder19 initiative

The agreement is a timely development ahead of the 42nd World Scout Conference where National Scout Organizations will vote on a Resolution and Constitutional Amendment to strengthen compliance and support to National Scout Organizations to implement the World Safe from Harm Policy
