Supporting Local Charities
Scouts in Action Week is an initiative by Scouts Australia. One week each year, many Scout Groups across Australia participate in running activities around a general theme. This year’s theme was Scouting in the Community, and Scouts across Australia were encouraged to do things within their local community. The Port Noarlunga Sea Scout troop, located in the Southern suburbs of South Australia, along the banks of the Onkaparinga River, chose to support local charities.
Each patrol decided on a charity they would like to support. They discussed the purpose of each charity and what each charity could utilize.
Some examples of the charities the patrols supported were the RSPCA and a local women’s shelter. The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is an animal shelter, taking care of abused, orphaned and mistreated animals including cats, dogs, horses, sheep and birds. Animals are available for adoption and they are always in need of donations to ensure that the animals have the best lives possible. The Scouts donated blankets, pillows, animal toys and cans of cat and dog food to assist the RSPCA continue their work.
The local women’s shelter is a home for women and children who are escaping domestic violence, they provide a safe refuge for families and are always in need of anything that makes life a little easier. The Scouts donated toys for children, clothing, blankets and pillows and non-perishable food to help the women’s shelter.
Representatives from the chosen charities were invited to come speak to our Scout Troop about what their charities do within the community and to give the Scouts an understanding of how their donations will help those in need.
The Port Noarlunga Sea Scout Troop enjoyed helping their local communities and furthering the understanding between them. The visits helped to create a better world for those affected by the donations given by the Scout Troop and helped raise awareness of the Charities for those involved.
