A team of 24 volunteers and 6 World Scout Bureau staff from the Africa Scout Region underwent a four-day intensive training in Nairobi, Kenya to equip them with knowledge, skills and tools to support the delivery of WOSM service to National Scout Organizations as Consultants. Th training which closes today in Nairobi was supported by a team of facilitators and experts from within World Scouting drawn from Africa and Europe.

Prior to the training, the participants took an introductory online induction training that included modules on Safe From Harm, WOSM Essentials, WOSM Services and Consultancy Skills. The e-learning courses helped to prepare them for the residential training.

At the training the participants were taken deeper into developing their consultancy skills, understanding, interpreting and developing services from requests by NSOs as well as a indepth understanding of their role as WOSM Consultants and the management of their lifecycle within the WOSM Services process. Using a series of lectures, games and group discussions they engaged in insightful and empowering discussions that have prepared them to better support WOSM in providing quality services to the NSOs.

These new Consultants join a team of others who were trained in Tunisia in 2018 and in Budapest in May 2019 to form a team of Global experts that National Scouts Organizations can draw upon to improve and grow Scouting in their countries. More consultants will be identified an trained across the world to add on to the already existing team.

“It was more for me merging the knowledge I had and developing new consultancy skills. It was a big plus,” says Grace Wanja.

Baskouda Shelley added that, “I know that Scouting is a game where you can play many roles. For me this was an opportunity to learn how to play another role. You have put a lot of trust in us and we can only promise to do our best.”

“I found people here who have their heart in the place you want them to have, and also have the curiosity and eagerness to help the millions of children in Scouting, indirectly; and that is something I am going to take home with me. To be here with all these people gives meaning to my life,” said Martjin, the lead expert who helped facilitate the workshop.

“The reality is that today the work is starting – it’s the beginning of a new adventure in a region that has the biggest chances of achieving growth and impact in the movement. What I learnt from everyone here is that there is always another perspective in life. Go on and enjoy to be Consultants and to be Scouts,” remarked Andrea Darmamels, former Chairperson of the European Scout Committee.

Tadej Pugelj, the Director for Adults in Scouting and Volunteer Development told the participants that, “It was really a lot of hardwork to bring the content, the flow and the spirit to the level that we are really confident that you will support all of our efforts to bring to the NSOs all support they will need.”

In his closing remarks the Regional Director, Frederic Kama-Kama challenged the consultants to contribute positively towards making Scouting more attractive to young people of today.

After the training the new WOSM consultants will be deployed to offer support in the different service areas they have been assigned. They will further receive coaching and direct support from the Service leads to help them continuously learn and improve their skills. At the end of a year they will be evaluated and certified.

National Scout Organizations are invited to visit services.scout.org to discover and learn more about how they can improve Scouting in their country through the 13 services offered by World Scouting and delivered by these consultants.
