Zambia has been constructing more hospitals in aid of meeting the "Health For All" goals, a WHO programme which promotes quality health for all. Although more clinics and hospitals have been built, the number of blood banks countrywide are still very low. A number of people are facing hemorrhaging from serious injury. There are some blood types that are still in short supply. There is still a lack of public knowledge +and awareness of blood donation and its critical role in saving lives. There are still misconceptions about the subject resulting in the spreading of negative information as well as rumours which led to commumities becoming hostile and undermining the need to ensure a well stocked national blood supply. The project is being undertaken with the support of the Zambia National Blood Transfusion Service, the only body mandated to conduct such an exercise.
The Team SIXX scout group implemented a Save Lives campaign to encourage, promote and sensitize communities on blood donation. The team managed to raise funds through the Scout Donation Platform, received training on blood donation and shared this knowledge to provide the general public with the right information about blood donation. In addition, the group also learned how to conduct a blood drive, mobilize communities and sensitized them further via media houses wheres Scouting is also promoted. The campaign has made a profound impact and continues to go from strength to strength.
