Amaroo Scouts Landcare Group

The Amaroo Scout Group is a nationally registered Landcare group which provides volunteer support for organisations and activities within the Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, along with Landcare and other volunteer activities within the Gungahlin and broader ACT region.

We assist ACT Parks in the the care of Management area 6 including weed control and litter removal.
We are members of the Friends of Mulligans Flat and assist with general maintenance, wildlife surveys and promotional events.
We assist the Ginninderra Catchment Group with Frogwatch and other water monitoring activities.

Many of our Scouts are also registered volunteers with ACT ParkCare and/or The Woodlands and Wetlands Trust, conducting general ParkCare and "Ranger Assist" activities. Several have undertaken additional training and are now qualified to assist with long term projects like Turtle Rescue Patrols.

I'm proud to say that I was part of this landcare group when I was a scout - I distinctly remember thoroughly enjoying Frogwatch (although the mosquitoes were terrible). Frogwatch is, for anyone who is not familiar, an initiative to conserve endangered frogs by recording their mating calls (croaks), and other information. Landcare groups, and registered individuals, are sent into nature reserves (such as Mulligan's Flat) and around local ponds to record frogs, before sending these recordings off to be analysed (split up into different frogs to note species abundance in one area). This small act of pressing 'record' on a small machine can help save endangered species such as the Corroboree frog. I found the recording of each component of Frogwatch extremely interesting: measuring the temperature of the water, the temperature of the air, and recording the frog sounds around the ponds in Mulligan's Flat. I have done a 'Frogwatch Night' with the scouts twice, and I intend (if I am able to find the resources) to complete one with my Venturer Unit. I also remember walking through Mulligan's Flat and flagging rabbit holes for the rangers, coming across an echnidna or two on the way. This was an extremely important project, and I am grateful I was able to be a part of it.
