Integration of the Digital Thumbprint Program on the Scouts of the World Award Discovery Launch
We are in the digital era. As of 2015, there are more than 44 million internet users in the Philippines, placing the country as the 15th among the world’s internet users. With internet connectivity penetration at 43.5%, close to half of the Philippine population is now online. Moreover, based on a report from the Philippine National Police (PNP), half of the internet users are adolescents aged 17 years old and below.
In the last few years, the country witnessed how the Internet has affected the nation, our local communities and ourselves:
> Data leaks from the government websites have compromised our privacy and security which may lead to identity theft
> The heat of the elections last May 2016 became a venue for grave threats, cyberbullying and propagation of unverified information.
> Frequent social media consumption has contributed to counter-productivity and loss of focus in the school and work
The Internet has taken an increasingly prominent role in the lives of the Filipino youth. With the time the youth spends online to do schoolwork or partake in online gaming and social media platforms, these young digital natives are exposed to a myriad of issues. It is necessary to educate the Filipino youth on digital citizenship, which refers to the responsible use of technology, be it through gadgets, website browsing and interacting with social media platforms.
Representing Globe Telecom, we've joined forces with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines in launching (and integrating) the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) on the 1st Scouts of the World Award Discovery Workshop. This is, technically, a first and unique on the SWA implementation/roll out. The campaign is to promote digital citizenship , cyberwellness and how the program can help our Scouts on their SWA projects.
The main aim is to educate as many Filipino youth on the importance of responsible use of the Internet via Scouting.
The Digital Thumbprint program offered three exciting modules to our SWA Senior and Rover Scouts participants:
1.) Digital Insight - provided activities for scouts to help discern proper online behavior
2.) Digital Impact - tackles issues on technology's impact on scouts' social activities
3.) Digital Ambition - equipped scouts with skills on how to use technology to help them achieve life goals and amplify the reach of their SWA project.
Each module was designed to increase the scout’s knowledge of digital citizenship and cybersafety by taking a critical look at their online behavior and helping them develop insights into the influences of the online world and the choices they are making.
With this initiative, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and Globe Telecom hopes to promote values that respect the dignity of each person online, with focus on the youth’s rights as regards to their safety and well-being as digital citizens.
