Making Young People the Face of Scouting
Yamoussoukro, 4 August 2016: The Young Correspondents and Spokespersons programme workshop kicked off within the framework of the Jamboree with 46 participants attending to learn and discuss about telling the Scouting story and how to represent Scouting well at all levels. The three-day training which ends on August 6, will see at least 120 young people benefit from learning essential skills in communication, journalism and public relations.
The main aim of the programme is to make young people the face of Scouting by equipping them with knowledge, skills and opportunities to represent and promote the cause of Scouting and position it as the world’s leading educational youth movement towards the achievement of World Scouting’s vision 2023.
Youth Engagement is a strategic priority for WOSM. To get there, the current WOSM triennial plan (2014-2017) stipulates that “Scouting should give young people the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge empowering them to take an active part in the Movement and in their communities. Involvement, recognition and intergenerational exchange are key in providing a framework for our youth members.”
However, in a significant number of NSOs, youth involvement at the unit, community, and institutional levels continues to be a challenge. In some instances young people are involved without clear roles and responsibilities being assigned to them. This may hamper both the overall growth of Scouting in the Region, and the positioning of Scouting as an organization that develops young and innovative leaders who are pro-active global citizens.
The training therefore, comes in handy to enhance the capacities of young people and develop their skills to become better communicators and able representatives of the Scout Movement. It also provides a platform for them to interact and learn form each other while helping to document and share the work Scouts is doing.
These young people will ultimately play a crucial role to support in the strategic development and implementation of communications, external relations and youth engagement activities at various Scouting events, like this jamboree, and in their National Scout Organizations in order to strengthen the profile of Scouting in Africa.
